Variflex Airzone Trampoline Review

Variflex Airzone TrampolineThe Bravo/Variflex Airzone trampoline is made with elastic bands instead of typical metal springs. The use of elastic bands can result in less injuries then falling on metal springs. However there are some trade offs to this design.

In the following video Justin Brock highlights the unsafe construction and poor design of the Variflex Airzone trampoline.

  • These include materials used to construct this trampoline being below average with the steel tubing used in the frame only half the thickness found in some high end trampolines.
  • The enclosure pulls do not have any protective cover over the foam resulting in the foam deteriorating quickly in the sunlight.
  • Does not have as much bounce as a typical trampoline
  • The lightweight weight frame can cause the trampoline to bend and flex resulting in damage to the frame.
  • The lightweight frame can also result in the trampoline moving or tipping over

Hi im Justin brock with trampolinesafety.com . Im here with the bravo airflex airzone 40 ft trampoline model number 4100 with the 4’920 safety enclosure. This airzone is a low cost trampoline which utilizes elastic bands instead of your typical metal springs.

As the user bounces closer to the edge the elastic bands are more forgiving then landing on or stepping in between typical metal springs. Lets look at some of the trade offs of this interesting trampoline design.

In general we found that the quality of the materials and construction used in this trampoline to be significantly below average. An example of this is the steel tubing used in the frame which is only half the thickness found in some high end trampolines. Another example of the sub par materials is the cheap netting. The net is made out of light weight, stiff and course materials. Unlike some systems we’ve seen enclosure pulls do not have any protective cover over the foam. We expect the foam to deteriorate very quickly in the sunlight. The installation procedure for this model was fairly straight forward. Keep in mind that just like any trampoline ensure that you attach the mat at the opposite side as you work around the diameter.

One unique features is the mat which comes with the elastic bands and pad are all attached. This is what it looks like when you’ve done. After you enter through the door you need to shut the door using the zipper. Kids in a hurry may forget to close the door which is a potential hazard. Our observation was that this trampoline does not have as much bounce as a typical trampoline. Lab test results confirm that the airzone band trampoline is far less efficient then even the average bargain trampoline. That means you have to work harder to jump and you cannot jump as high. Because of the very lightweight frame the airflex trampoline tends to bend and flex quite a bit. Another problem caused by its extreme lightweight is that an active jumper can actually hop the airflex off the ground.

Another concern that we found is due to the lightness of this trampoline there is a tipping hazard. During testing the user of 175 pounds tipped over the entire trampoline. We were unable to do further tests due to damages to the frame that were irreparable. The airzone model 4100 trampoline and 4’920 Safety enclosure use a design that incorporates elastic bands instead of metal sprigs. The cheap materials for construction, poor performance and poor safety enclosure are definitely something to consider before purchasing this trampoline. This trampoline can be purchased at Wal-Mart, 1800trampolines.com or the sports authority. Im Justin brock with trampolinesafety.com.
